What is Cyber
Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is the UK government certification which protects SME's (small and medium sized enterprises) from 98.5% of cyber attacks. It is the recommended level of cyber-scurity for businesses.

The Cyber Essentials framework focuses on five important technical controls which are designed to guard against the most common internet based cyber security threats.

Cyber attacks come in many shapes and sizes, but the vast majority are very basic in nature, carried out by relatively unskilled individuals. They’re the digital equivalent of a thief trying your front door to see if it’s unlocked. Cyber Essentials malware protection is designed to prevent these attacks.

Cyber Essentials vs Cyber Essentials Plus

There are two levels of certification to consider: Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus.

CYBER ESSENTIALS

Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment questionnaire submitted online to IASME (IASME is the certification body). It helps you address the basic and most common attacks by focusing on key areas of your IT infrastructure.

CYBER ESSENTIALS PLUS

Cyber Essentials Plus is the highest level of certification. It's similar to basic Cyber Essentials, but involves an even more rigorous test of your business' security systems, including an external scan carried out by cyber security experts.

Cyber Essentials
vs ISO 27001

Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001 seem similar at first glance, but different businesses will require different certifications, if not both.

The main difference between the two is that ISO 27001 certification takes into account all forms of information, whether digital or on paper. Cyber Essentials, on the other hand, focuses only on digital elements.

Depending on the size and nature of your business, you may be required to have Cyber Essentials certification, and you may benefit from ISO 27001 certification.
