VoIP (Or Voice over Internet Protocol) is a method to transmitting voice, such as a telephone call, over a standard IP network. Or to put it another way, making and receiving calls over the Internet. You may also hear the term unified communications. This just means it all happens using the same basic infrastructure as something that is in place already, i.e. the data network.
VoIP reduces the handling costs of calls. We no longer need to manage a separate set of wires and sockets to provide a telephone system as well as a data network. This makes installing and managing an entire office or network easier. There is only a need for data sockets. Connected into these can be either 'standard' network devices, such as PCs or printers, or telephone handsets. The benefits to using IP to connect devices are so great that BT's 21CN network, the new high speed network being rolled out at the moment to all exchanges throughout the UK, is designed and built on IP. This means that by the time the project is finished all phone calls in the UK will be routed over IP, so everyone will be using VoIP!
